Gallery-strollin', Nutcrackin' and Offbeat-shoppin': Your weekend in a nutshell

Just in case the unusually snow-free weather has kept you from feeling all Christmasy so far, there are plenty of activities going down around town to kick-start your holiday spirit. Let's take a look, shall we?

Tonight marks the opening of Ballet West's annual run of The Nutcracker, a long-time holiday fave in pretty much every city I've ever lived in. I'm not sure what artistic director Adam Sklute has in story for this year's edition, but if it's anything like the troupe's production of The Tempest, it will be brilliant. The Nutcracker runs through Dec. 27.

Tonight, you can catch an all-acoustic show by the fine country-rockers Limbeck, playing at Kilby Court at 7:30 p.m., along with the Black Hounds and Standing Solo. At the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society, 6876 S. Highland, catch this month's local concert sponsored by the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association, featuring guitarist Austin Weyand and bluegrass kids Crescent Moon. And tonight in the Black Box Theatre at the Rose Wagner, catch jazz cat Dan Waldis performing jazz-tinged holiday tunes at 7:30 p.m.

Tonight also marks opening night for the new Pioneer Theatre Company production of The Light in the Piazza (left), running through Dec. 20 at the Pioneer Memoral Theatre at the U. Check back here Tuesday for a review.

Also tonight, it's a special Holiday Gallery Stroll in Salt Lake City, with galleries all over town offering new shows, many of them Christmas-themed, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Among the highlights are a multi-artist show at the offices of the Utah Arts Festival, 230 South 500 West, Suite 120. You can hop right next door to the Art Access Gallery in Suite 125 for the opening of their holiday show featuring the work of 28 artists. The Salt Lake Art Center is hosting an art talk with Jay Heuman, introducing a new work in the museum's Contemporary Trends in Video Art series, Steve Reinke's four-minute Regarding the Pain of Susan Sontag (Notes on Camp). Tonight at Ken Sanders Rare Books, Salt Lake Tribune cartoonist Pat Bagley will be signing copies of his new book, Fist Bump Heard 'Round the World from 6 to 9.

Park City's Julie Nester Gallery is hosting a reception at 5:30 p.m. for artist Carol O'Malia's Outside In show. In Provo, the BYU Museum of Art is opening a new show tonight called Dan Steinhilber, featuring the artist of the same name's installation works built from household objects like hangers, trash bags and light bulbs. His work will also be among the first featured in the 337 Project's Art Truck, once it gets moving.

Today and tomorrow make your last chances to check out the Old World Christmas Market at the Gallivan Center. The shops along Broadway are hosting a "Holidays on Broadway" bash from 3 to 9 today, with all kinds of sweet deals to be had at the record stores, book stores and fashion stops along SLC hippest shopping block. The Salt Lake Art Barn opens its annual holiday craft sale tonight at 6, and the sale runs until Dec. 21.

SATURDAY

Saturday at 10 a.m., Red Butte Garden opens its two-day open house and art fair, where all sorts of holiday knick-knacks from local artists will be on sale. Admission is free.

Also Saturday, artist Brian Kershisnik will give a free lecture at 2 p.m. at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts about his painting Nativity, currently on display in the building's main lobby.

Finally, up at Park City's Eccles Center for the Performing Arts, catch up-and-coming Texas roots-rocker Ryan Bingham doing his thing at 7:30 p.m.
