For Those About to Rock ...

For Those About to Rock ...

Just a couple quick hits for y'all tonight, with a shout-out to the veterans for all they've done for the good ol' U.S. of A. Here's hoping the new administration will actually honor y'all in the ways you deserve: jobs, health care, counseling.

Now, off the soapbox and onto the RAWK, which is landing in a massive four-band bill tonight at ye olde Saltair out Magna way.

Rise Against is the headliner, and rightly so given the band's commercial appeal. Their new album, Appeal to Reason, is a bit of a blockbuster, and anomaly in that it's both a major-label punk album, and that it's a hit album with some actual political opinions espoused in its grooves.

I think Rise Against is a decent band, but far more intriguing to me is Alkaline Trio (pictured), a goth-ish rock three-piece from Chicago whose members, according to some reports, have been known to dabble a bit in Satanism. You wouldn't notice that aspect of the band's personality in their oh-so-catchy pop-punk tunes, but perhaps their typical red and black attire is a tip-off. Nor would you necessarily know that the band are active in the effort to free the West Memphis Three, a group of three now-adults who were convicted of murder as teenagers, based mostly on the fact they listened to rock music and read Stephen King books.

Tonight's show starts at 7:30 p.m., costs $28 and also includes Thrice and The Gaslight Anthem on the bill.

You can also catch Steel Train headlining a show at Kilby Court at 7 p.m., with Dear and the Headlights, Forgive Durden, Mury and Person L also on the bill.
