This morning I got to check out the long-anticipated Body Worlds 3, a science-meets-art display taking over The Leonardo (aka, the old Salt Lake library) until mid-January. You've probably seen the ads or heard some word about Body Worlds. It's a massively popular exhibition that showcases more than 200 real human specimens in various states of what I'll call disrepair. The Body Worlds folks have samples of virtually every organ, bone and muscle in the body, each of them sitting in a display case for your examination. That's all well and good, but really, looking at a spleen or a kidney or even a heart is a little underwhelming. Unfortunately, much of the beginning of the exhibit consists of its...

I'm leaving the Lounge Monday morning for a week-long float down the Green River through Dinosaur National Monument. I'm psyched; just look at that scene. Pretty dope, eh? The sold-out Al Green concert Wednesday night at Red Butte Garden featured a smooth set of R&B classics, delivered by a consummate showman with a stellar band and a flair for the dramatic.
In other words, it was exactly what I was hoping for.
I heard some kvetching in the aftermath about the brevity of the show—about 75 minutes—and the fact that Green let the crowd take over the vocals too much. Neither of those complaints hold water with me. The show didn't seem short, especially when you're planted up front dancing the whole time as I was. And Green is a preacher and gospel singer, and the call-and-response style of performing is not only common in church; it's common in old soul and R&B...

Any typical time that Nine Inch Nails stops in Utah, I am there. Trent Reznor is one of the ultimate '90s rock guys who is still alive and kicking and putting out worthwhile music. Most recently, he put out his latest album, The Slip, for free through his own Web site after leaving Interscope, and the set is a fine return to his pop/goth/industrial background. And Nine Inch Nails' shows are always worthy, featuring explosive performances, tons of eye candy and more monster hit songs than you remember from Reznor's catalog. Can you believe it's been nearly 20 years since "Head Like a Hole?" Tonight, Nine Inch Nails play at West Valley City's E Center, with Deerhunter opening.

Fans of Smokey and the Bandit will join me in mourning the passing of Jerry Reed, aka The Snowman. Not only did he play Burt Reynolds' buddy in the film; he also did the classic theme song, "East Bound and Down." And I always loved his hit "She Got the Goldmine (And I Got the Shaft)."
Here's a clip of "East Bound and Down," inexplicably set to highlights from "The Dukes of Hazzard," which had its own damn theme song courtesy of Waylon Jennings. But whatever. |

DEER VALLEY — Anyone who thinks of Dwight Yoakam as just another big-hat country crooner is missing the boat on one of America's great songwriters and performers. Yes, Yoakam is country to the core, his music deeply rooted in the Bakersfield sound of his hero Buck Owens. But he's a thoroughly modern country maverick who dares to cover songs by acts like Queen, The Clash and Cheap Trick alongside the twangy hits of his influences and his own brilliant tunes. And all of Yoakam's far-reaching talents were on display Saturday at a packed Deer Valley concert.
Backed by a stellar band, Yoakam played several songs from his most-recent album, Dwight Sings Buck, a set loaded with Owens' songs that...

I spent most of my high-school years in obscure Texas record stores, searching out Bob Dylan bootlegs. Pressed on colored vinyl, wrapped in plain white sleeves, my collection of Mark of Quality discs, beginning with Great White Wonder, became my most seductive asset. In mid-70s Austin, “Wanna see my Bob Dylan bootleg collection?” was a fail-safe pick-up line.
Obviously, I was a natural stand-in for Nailen for Bob Dylan’s concert at Deer Valley Sunday night.
”Was it canceled?”...
