vegan faceSalt Lake City's Vertical Dinerwas voted "Restaurant of the Month" by VegCooking. com. Congrats tochef/owner Ian Brandt, who has been our city's proponent of the veglifestyle for years, as proprietor of Sage's and—for the last 8months—Vertical Diner. The Diner is 100% veganand, speaking as one who has arranged catering (the tricky part: thecake) for a vegan's wedding, I have a lot of admiration for someone whocan create variety and taste with what appear to many of us to belimited resources. Specialties include quesadillas stuffed withportobellos, guacamole, vegan "sour cream" and your choice of "meat."Other dishes include the Tender Tiger "chicken" strips, fresh-cutfries, Boca "burgers," and "chicken" sandwiches. Vertical also featuresseveral organic beers and wines.
I have to say it's the quotation marks that get me about this particular cuisine. You wear your fingers out talking about it.
Vertical Diner is located at 2280 S. West Temple, and the phone number is 801-484-VERT (8378).

About This Blog

A lack of serious ambition, a love of cooking and a degree in Latin naturally led to a career in food writing for Mary Brown Malouf.

Her 25 years of experience has included stints as executive editor of D magazine in Dallas, Texas; executive editor at wine.com in Napa, California; and restaurant critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

Now, she’s the dining editor for Salt Lake magazine, where she writes about the food scene in Salt Lake City and beyond. Check in regularly for the latest restaurant news, great products from local purveyors, and conversation about all things gustatory.

If you have news, tips or other information about the dining scene you'd like to share, email Mary.
