Locavores everywhere

02/29/08 - 02:25 PM

The New Oxford American Dictionary, published by Oxford University Press, recently announced its 2007 Word of the Year: locavore. It beat out other new locutions like "bacn," a kind of email spam;"previvor," a person who has survived a genetic likelihood for cancer, and "mumblecore," a film genre using unprofessional actors in alow-budget production, like Hannah Takes the Stairs and Funny Ha Ha,films that are described as "severely naturalistic" or "neo-slacker."(I suspect "unwatchable-except-by-close- friends-of-the-film-maker"would be a more accurate definition.)

But "locavore"—now there's a word worth chewing on and one that SaltLake diners have taken to heart. It means, of course, a person who eatslocally-grown foods.

Read more about the word's evolution here.

About This Blog

A lack of serious ambition, a love of cooking and a degree in Latin naturally led to a career in food writing for Mary Brown Malouf.

Her 25 years of experience has included stints as executive editor of D magazine in Dallas, Texas; executive editor at wine.com in Napa, California; and restaurant critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

Now, she’s the dining editor for Salt Lake magazine, where she writes about the food scene in Salt Lake City and beyond. Check in regularly for the latest restaurant news, great products from local purveyors, and conversation about all things gustatory.

If you have news, tips or other information about the dining scene you'd like to share, email Mary.
