Seasonal delight

Seasonal delight

You have to be a pretty literate person to eat seasonally—read the labels and the signage to make sure those strawberries are from California and not Chile and you can only feel okay about that if you actually live in California, not Utah.

The truth is, there aren't many seasonal foods left—if you really want to roast chestnuts in August, you can get'em from somewhere.

One exception remains: Girl Scout cookies. I have gone without the last few years, because we seem to live in a Scout-free neighborhood, or else parents are too afraid let the girls sell in the questionable historic refinery district where I live. But today, the form came around and I signed up for 3 boxes of Thin Mints. That's a small order for me. When I had kids in the house I used to delight whichever Girls Scout knocked on my door—"I'll buy 3 cases, please," was my usual response. Jackpot!!

Those heady, gluttonous days are behind me. But I'm looking forward to my seasonal allotment of Thin Mints. I'll put them in the freezer and leave them for a couple of days before breaking them out. Then before eating them, I'll enjoy that distinctive clackety sound they make once the chocolate/paraffin coating on the outside is ice-hard—sort of like plastic poker chips. Like I said, jackpot!

If no one knocks on your door, here's where to get yours.

Oh, I am so with you on this. And putting them in the freezer is key to proper enjoyment. I also appreciate gorging on the Samoas as well.

This is the first year I've ever bought them. $3 a box! I'm with Anonymous: Thin Mints and Samoas are the best. Does anyone really buy the other kinds? Mary, you should take a poll.
