We love onions

We love onions

As we fled from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus on Sunday evening, I thought longingly of ricotta dumplings. We'd had a popcorn-free movie viewing and I was starving and I needed proof of a comforting, sane universe. Dumplings would have been an answer.

Right next to the Broadway Theatre, we could see folks eating in the new Copper Onion on the second night of the restaurant's trial run. I couldn't tell without pressing my nose to the glass whether or not they were eating dumplings, but we'd been Copper Onion's guests the night before and the fat little spinach-flecked ricotta dumpling appetizer still lingered in my mind's palate.

The restaurant's backstory is the homecoming of Ryan Lowder, a native Utahn with a good restaurant resume (experience with Jean-Georges and Mario Batali). Lowder and his wife Colleen used all the right buzzwords describing their new restaurant—"local," "sustainable," "housemade" and "sophisticated," but the proof is in the pudding and our pudding was good on Saturday—lamb ribs, which we've learned to love at MacCool's, here served with grilled lemon and blistered shishito peppers, were another great appetizer, entrees of cod and roast chicken were good—altogether, Copper Onion promises to be a great addition to downtown dining, especially for movie-goers.

At first, it will only be open for dinner, but eventually lunch and Sundays (!!!) will be on the schedule.

Today is its first day open to the public and I'm siked. Go friend the place in person and on Facebook.
Copper Onion, 111 E. 300 south, 801-355-3282.

I've already eaten there and those lamb riblets with peppers are killer! Great food and very reasonable prices! Looking forward to more meals at the Onion soon!

Make that psyched...you could look it up. I'm personally thrilled to find that restaurant space opened again. We miss Mr.Z's! We always found a warm welcome there after a film at Broadway. Other cafe attempts have come and gone in that building with alarming regularity. Good luck to the Copper Onion!
