More news than you can eat

A friend sent me a link to a YouTube piece this morning, said to be a film shown at Sony’s executive conference this year. The film says that four exabytes of unique information will be generated this year, more than in the previous 5,000 years.

(What is an exabyte, you ask? I Googled it for you. It's one quintillion bytes.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exabyte. Good to know.)

Does that make your head hurt? Yes, it does. TMI, as they say in text lingo. It also makes my tummy hurt—here are just some of the food-related bytes that came my way this morning:

  • The Wisconsin production of tart cherries is back up this year.
  • The 2009 Iowa State Fair will display a butter sculpture of the late Michael Jackson.
  • Mississippi is still the most obese state in the U.S., but obesity is getting worse, not better, in 23 states.
  • If you contribute $1 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America at Old Spaghetti Factory, you get a coupon for free garlic cheese bread your next visit.
  • John Lee Hooker, Jr. will be performing at Sun & Moon Café on July 6–7.
  • Kent Rathbun, chef-owner of Abacus in Dallas (who once called me “the devil” in reference to my restaurant reviews) will be one of the celebrity chefs at the Crested Butte Land Trust Food & Wine event in July.
  • Too much sugar causes wrinkles.
  • The Farmers Market in Ancestor Square in St. George will have live music, as well as organic veg; arts and crafts; and artisan cheese the morning of July 4, this weekend.

A lack of serious ambition, a love of cooking and a degree in Latin naturally led to a career in food writing for Mary Brown Malouf.

Her 25 years of experience has included stints as executive editor of D magazine in Dallas, Texas; executive editor at wine.com in Napa, California; and restaurant critic for The Salt Lake Tribune.

Now, she’s the dining editor for Salt Lake magazine, where she writes about the food scene in Salt Lake City and beyond. Check in regularly for the latest restaurant news, great products from local purveyors, and conversation about all things gustatory.
