
Black Opal Productions and director Cid Collins Walker held a fundraiser for the new documentary, Arc of Light: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss, at the Finch Lane and Park Galleries on March 12. More than 75 people attended to help kick off efforts to raise $60,000 this year. Bliss, a local artist, displayed her work, and the film trailer was screened. The release date is scheduled for early 2011.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade made downtown turn green on March 13. Irish families walked the route with pipe bands, dancers and local businesses. Mac’s Band performed a tribute to Real Salt Lake soccer and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon showed his support. The Hibernian Society of Utah held a siamsa (party) at the Gateway’s Grand Hall after the parade with step dancers and live music.
The Sounds for Hope concert raised funds for Salt Lake County Children's Justice Center on March 3 at Libby Gardner Hall. KUTV's Shauna Lake and Mark Koelbel hosted, and Utah Chamber Artists performed. The Gifted Music School Orchestra, directed by Eugene Watanabe, headlined the concert with an amazing set of classical music and ended with Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling in Love.
The American Red Cross, Greater Salt Lake Chapter honored heroes and raised more than $100,000 on March 3 at the Salt Palace. Gov. Gary Herbert and other famous locals chose all 12 local heroes and groups, including Lifetime Achievement Award winner Paula Green Johnson. Dave Collins surprised Military Hero Sgt. Brady Johnson by thanking him for saving his life after a devastating bicycle crash in American Fork Canyon.
DJ Samantha Ronson heated up Downstairs on Feb. 20 for Saturday Ladies Night (no cover for ladies). The Park City club, owned by Seth Hill and actor Danny Masterson, was filled, and Ronson put together an intimate set with energetic tracks. Hill says he expects Ronson back later this year.
Eight Park City restaurants raised money for Art-Kids at the 'Step up to the Plate' culinary competition Feb. 28 at The Swaner EcoCenter. Guests enjoyed food from all the establishments, including Salt Lake magazine 2010 Dining Award winners Goldener Hirsch Inn and Squatters. Art-Kids supports local youth-development and after-school programs.
Utah's best restaurateurs were honored with signature award plates at Salt Lake magazine’s 2010 Dining Awards on Feb. 23 at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Dining Editor Mary Brown Malouf welcomed guests, and online readers followed the event live on Twitter. This year’s winners will be featured in the March issue of Salt Lake – including Bambara’s Nathan Powers, winner of the prestigious Best Chef Award.
The Tardy Mardi Party raised money for this summer's Utah Arts Festival on Feb. 20 at the Salt Lake Hardware Building. Guests were decked out in beads and boas and enjoyed casino games, drinks, dancing and a Texas Hold 'Em tournament. Tickets to the Festival this June were also available, and the Hyatt Place offered guests a special rate on rooms.
Salt Lake Symphony raised about $10,000 at the Vienna Ball on Feb. 13 at the University of Utah Olpin Ballroom. KUER's Steve Williams hosted, and more than 400 guests – including Austrian Consul Franz Kolb – enjoyed Viennese waltzes by the Symphony and Wayne Christiansen Trio. Dance Sport in Motion's Cindy Prather led a grand march to open the event, and the BYU Ballroom Dancers performed throughout the night.
