Cheap eats: Mama's Plantation
The white Ionic columns in front of this otherwise modest building have a slightly ironic feel, but they definitely signal “Southern.” The flowery interior further emphasizes that Mama’s is a Dixie outpost catering to the legendary Southern taste for floral fabrics and deep-fried food. Soul food doesn’t have deep roots in Salt Lake, and if you’re smart, your dinner plate at Mama’s will be a mass of glistening, golden crust—fried chicken, fried catfish, fried hushpuppies or french-fried potatoes. But don’t neglect the collard greens or sweet potato pie, in which the humblest of ingredients are lifted to satisfying sublimity. And don’t forget cash; Mama’s doesn’t accept credit cards.
