Newcomer: Sego Lily
Bountiful's Sego Lily Cafe
The lunch menu made our mouths water—deciding between the “pot roast burger” and the house-made pastrami sandwich with caramelized onions was difficult. And that was without factoring in the meatloaf sandwich with smoked apple barbecue sauce or the fresh salmon BLT.
In the end, the special sandwich of artisanal sausage with cranberries won out. Both it and the pot roast burger proved to be more lunch than we could handle; we had to set aside halves to take home so we could eat our fill of the herbed french fries. Sated as we were, the lunch demanded that we return to Sego Lily in Bountiful for dinner soon.
Owned by the same people as Salt Lake’s Caffé Molise, Sego Lily doesn’t share a lot of menu items with its sibling. Pork Aristo, thick tenderloin slices with black mission figs, is one. Shortribs, braised with Asian flavors of ginger and vegetables, were unique to the evening, and other dishes, like prosciutto-wrapped salmon, ground sirloin meatloaf and mojo pork (shoulder, braised with local squash, black beans and fresh citrus), were also chef’s creations. The wine list is short and sweet.
Something about the acoustics of this Bountiful restaurant makes you feel like you’re dining at a friend’s house. It is a house, of course, a lovely Craftsman building with beveled transoms, oak moldings and high ceilings, and somehow the architecture sets the pace when you’re dining at Sego Lily. You tend to slow down a bit, listen a little better, even chat, perhaps, with people at the next table. Can a gracious setting encourage gracious behavior? We’ll have to investigate further.
