I struggle with baking, but this recipe requires very little work and very few ingredients, so it seemed like it was worth a shot. Little did I know, it changed my life. Why would you ever buy bread when it's this simple to make?! Without further ado, I give you...
The Easiest Bread Known to Man
1 1⁄2 cups lukewarm water
1 1⁄2 tbsp granulated yeast
1 tbsp + 1 tsp salt
1/2 cup honey
1 1⁄2 cups lukewarm milk
5 tbsp vegetable oil
6 2/3 cups unbleached wheat flour (You can use a combination of white and wheat, but the dough will require extra flour or it will be too moist.)
Part 1
In a bowl that is NOT metal, mix together the water, yeast, salt, honey, milk, and oil. Gradually add flour and mix (with a sturdy spoon!) until evenly combined. Allow to rise for 3 hours…and be sure to cover the bowl with something breathable, like aluminum foil with holes poked in it, to keep off drafts. If you want the dough to be a little easier to work with, you can refrigerate it overnight and work with it in the morning.
Part 2
Spray a medium-sized loaf pan with cooking spray. Pull off a large portion of dough (about the size of a small cantaloupe, or your two fists together… about 1/3 of the dough in the bowl). Stretch the “corners” of the dough underneath to form it into a ball. Place the dough into the loaf pan, then slash the top of the dough. This will help it expand to fill the length of the pan.
Let the dough rest for 1 hour and 40 minutes. About 5 minutes before you are ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350, with an old cake pan on the bottom rack. Once the oven has preheated, place your loaf pan on the top rack and put two cups of hot water in the cake pan. Bake for 1 hour, or until deep brown.
