In spite of mayor Dana Williams' folksy fireside demeanor and mandolin skills, three new promo spots showcasing Park City cuisine look decidedly, well ...see for yourself:
Though Park City chefs take one step up for local cuisine and attempt more than just lipservice to sustainability - as Mary Malouf spake in her recent review of Goldener Hirsch - a promo video selling endangered tuna poke, Alaskan king crablegs and all things a decade-ago and un-PC takes the dining scene on the Wasatch (two steps) Back.
Yikes.
If you've got the scratch, there's lovely stuff going on at Spruce, J&G, Talisker on Main and Stein Eriksen, but what are your options in PC for a couple wanting grass-fed, locally grown pork/lamb/chicken/beef/veggies? How 'bout fresh fish caught in the Provo? How about a meal featuring Utah eggs, melons, tomatoes and cheese for under $40?
...
Nada.
Easy to play armchair foodie and chirp about what PC really needs - and since we're no strangers to starting at Monday Morning QB, here's just a few ideas we can bite...investors take note:
Lokal in Sonoma, Calif.: Dubbed as European Soul Food the restaurant serves beer and brats in the heart of wine country. Offerings include chicken schnitzel ($16) washed in egg batter and pan-fried with bacon-flecked sweet-and-sour red cabbage spaetzle; a nightly fish special (caught locally) and apps like the mixed grill ($11) featuring sausages, mustards and pickled veggies. Or, there's a Tivoli two-dog dipper ($5) - two sausages with mustard and ketsup. The sausages are made from parts of local animals and ground in house.
Meat Cheese Bread in Portland, Ore. Portland knows how to make a sandwich, but nary an offering in Park City beyond traditional Subway-meets-grocery-deli-counter fare. Meat Cheese Bread takes local greens, cheeses, veggies, breads and meats to make a little easy-on-the-wallet magic. How bout the flank steak sandwich, blue cheese and a pile of meat ($7); sloppy Joe's ($8) featuring local ground (maybe in PC it could even be buffalo Joe's - hey there's a name) or a local BLT made from Kamas pork and locally grown tomatoes and beets ($8)?
Wood Tavern Restaurant in Oakland, Calif. Not too difficult to duplicate here. The owners took a small space, added a little light and light fare to create an American brasserie. Menu has all the stuff you can get in the Beehive: local cheese board, pork bellys with lentil; free range pan-roasted chicken, spinach and poached egges, sherried mushrooms, grilled (again, local) pork chop, smoked bacon and mushrooms, warm chocolate cake. Wait? Is this Oakland or Utah? All starters around $8; entrees $10-$15.
But why look so far away for culinary inspiration? Where is the PC version of Pizzeria 712 in Orem; Communal in Provo; Forage, Pago, Vinto, Sea Salt in Salt Lake City?
Our question to you (please comment below): Where's the best place in Utah to grab a meal?
