Oktoberfest at Snowbird runs noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day, opening this weekend on Aug. 21. Expect music, dancing, Der Marktplatz for traditional German cuisine (Bavarian roasted almonds, bratwurst, sauerkraut, apfelstrudel). Local Utah breweries will be featured, and admission is free.
The tradition started in the early 19th century, when King Ludwig called for a fair to celebrate his royal Bavarian wedding. It turned into a celebration of the harvest and the areas most lucrative product, beer. The tradition carried on in Munich since that time and has been celebrated at Snowbird for the past 38 years. More than 50,000 guests turn out every year.
Kids will also have a great time. This year's fest includes face painting, a caricature artist, inflatable rides, Shan the magician and Dale the Yo-Yo Man.
Other activities like the Peruvian Express Chairlift and Tunnel, Ropes Course, ZipRider, Alpine Slide and other attractions will also be open.
