Today is Strange Music Day -started by Julliard grad Patrick Grant, the founder of Strange Music Inc. (a group dedicated releasing new, compelling work). The whole point of the holiday is to pick up CD of a band you've never heard or wander into a music club with a style you're just not used to.

In honor the special day, we count down the top five "strange" acts on their way to Utah. Tix on sale now.

1. Vanilla Ice...Not the same Rob Van Winkle you remember, but he actually is. Vanilla has a new look minus the DA haircut and American flag jumper. The fact he's been spitting the same, close to cheesy, rhymes since '89 is pretty unique. We know he's going to play the new version of Ice Ice Baby, but hopes are high for Go Ninja Go.

9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 The Bay, 404 S. West Temple, SLC Click here for tix - $15

2. The Spazmatics...If the boys from Revenge of the Nerds just happened to rock out. Cornelius, Sheldon, Habib Aboob and Lewis play '80s hits every Saturday night at Liquid Joe's. Meet them at the show, and you won't know whether to talk music or discuss the latest History Channel special. (You can also see The Metal Gods at Joe's on Thursday nights...also strange.)

Every Saturday Night Liquid Joe's, 1249 E. 3300 South, SLC Click here for more info

3. IMAGINE: Remembering the Fab Four...Forming a Beatles cover band: unique. Faking accents, wearing faux mustaches and dressing to fit Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club: strange. Imagine was the first act to ever play USANA Amphitheater and have shared the stage with everyone from They Might Be Giants to The Temptations.

7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 Ogden Amphitheater, 343 E. 25th Street, Ogden Click here for tix

4.  The Legendary Pink Dots...The intro to the band's About Us page is enough to qualify them as a little strange: "We, the Legendary Pink Dots feel it is our duty to inform an unwary public that the new number of the Beast is 834." Pop and psychedelic melodies with violent, apocalyptic lyrics. Yes! The band released more than 40 albums and has had just about as many members.

7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18 The Complex, 537 W. 100 South, SLC Click here for tix -$15

5.Blood on the Dance Floor...Remember the hit Michael Jackson song with the same name? Forget it. Blood on the Dance Floor is all about the rave, and with just one look you know they're a little strange. Actually pretty fun to listen to on the Legacy late at night on your way home from Layton...yep, I a fan.
