Ahh, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is almost here. Time to have some fun and look forward to a four-day work week, but make sure you fit in some service to the community while you're at it.

Monday is a day of service, in honor of the civil rights leader, and we know ways to have fun and help the community this weekend.

Toy, books and blanket drive for CJC

The Children's Justice Center of Utah and Wasatch Counties takes in kids and families affected by physical or sexual abuse. Explain to your kids just how hard it is for these families and why it's important to donate good, quality items.

Then take new toys, books and/or fleece blankets to Thanksgiving Point's Musuem of Ancient Life, SCERA Center for the Arts, or Mountainland Association of Governments. The drive runs now through Jan. 18.

The con men end up tricking the entire court, and a kid is the only one who has the guts to speak up against the tomfoolery. Honoring Volunteers

The Hogle Zoo honors is volunteer this MLK weekend with a ceremony on Jan. 15. Honorees have logged about 20,000 service hours at the zoo and a group of them will be given the President's Volunteer Service Award. Other honorees will be given a glazed plate painted by Christie, one of the zoo's African elephants or a framed picture of one of the animals with their name and service hours. It's all going down at a ceremony on Jan. 15. Could be a great opp. to show your kids how service work really pays off.
