Gotta read Dawn House’s piece in the Trib today: It's bad news, not just for beer drinkers but for Utahns, generally.
It's just been—revealed? realized? discovered?—that the the Zion Curtain law passed last session by the Utah legislature doesn’t just apply to bartenders mixing drinks.
It applies to beer-only restaurants, too! No, really.
Yup, turns out that you can’t pop a top on a beer or pull a tap in front of customers. You must order food to buy a beer, beer-only restaurants must install a partition so customers can’t see their beer being poured, beer sales can’t exceed 30 percent of a restaurant’s revenue.
What’s especially funny—okay, or sad—is that the Utah legislature seems surprised to realize this is part of the law they passed.
No one seems sure whose idea this was. No one is claiming it now.
Senate president Michael Waddoups says he doesn’t know who pushed for the beer provisions. Rep. Greg Hughes says he’s not sure the law is “what we envisioned it to be.”
What???
Well, visualize this, Utah lawmakers: businesses choosing not to open in Utah. Restaurants deciding not to grow their business in Utah. Tourists choosing not to come to Utah. Fewer jobs in Utah.
News like this makes me feel like having a beer for breakfast. You with me?
