It's the prettiest part of the year and I’ve been staring into a computer monitor every day all day this week. The weekend calls for a country drive to see those allegedly gorgeous leaves and I’m going to make sure there’s an untried restaurant at the end of every road.
Here'w where I'm going:
First stop: Montage Deer Valley
Yes, the fortress on the tailings. Montage’s mass is wedged into the head of the canyon, and looks like a great place to take refuge when the Goths and Vandals lay siege to SLC, but security aside, here’s why I’m interested in yet another luxury, high-dollar resort restaurant: Montage has an on-staff beekeeper and a chocolate star, pastry chef Raymond Lammers in the kitchen. (Yes, you know him from Stein Eriksen.) Beekeeper Kyle Kanno oversees the hives and the honey production—the honey is used at Apex and sold in the coffee shop.
Chef Raymond Lammers does a chocolate flight dessert that includes Cacao Barry chocolate with a Lactee Caramel filling, Amano Madagascar dark chocolateand the ultra-rare Maranon, Fortunato No. 4 chocolate from Peru. They’re paired with wine in the Vista lounge.
In the opposite direction, I want to try Carlos & Harley’s, a Mexican restaurant up in Eden that claims to serve Tex-Mex. The restaurant is in Eden’s old general store, circa 1890, so I’m expecting charm in the place and we’ll see about the plate.
I've nevr been to Harley & Buck’s either, also near Eden. I’ve missed several wine dinners there because of date conflicts, but the views are supposed to be fantastic and I’m kinda dying to find out why everything in Eden seems to be named Harley.
Is it really about motorcycles?
Anyone out there know?
