A gift from the heart

So, making a donation in someone's name isn't always the best gift. What if they don't value the organization as much as you do. But Arts-Kids, a free after school art program for kids of all economic statuses and ethnicities, is a pretty safe bet.

As a symbol of your donation in your recipient's name, you'll get a gift donor card to stuff in his or her stocking. Cards have one of two hand-painted designs by Arts-Kids artist, author and illustrator Corinne Humphrey.

All donations are tax deductible. Contact Pat Sanger at 801-615-7878 or pat@arts-kids.org for more info.

Now, on to events to check out around town with the kids this weekend.

The Living Planet's electric "Christmas" eel

Not to save power, but just because it's awesome, the Living Planet is keeping the lights on a five-foot Christmas tree lit with electricity from an eel.

The Christmas display is in the aquarium's Journey to South America gallery.

Voltage from the eels is channeled into stainless steel electrodes and used to power a sequencer, which takes the voltage and operates the circuitry in the lights. They can blink fast or slow based on how much the eel is producing.

Here's a video, but you really need to see this in person:
