For the culture section of our 2012 Best of the Beehive, we had an entire sidebar mapped out for locally-filmed Youtube videos, along with a few extra favorites for fake rivers in Utah. Since we couldn't fit them in the mag, we put them right here.

Fake Rivers (scroll down for the link to those that made it in the mag):

Lagoon-a-Beach Lazy River
Around and around and around you go on the precisely regulated, chemically cleaned current, in no danger from rapids, rocks, bears or anything but being bumped by another inner tube. Ahhh, nature. lagoonpark.com

The Gateway
Gateway’s centerpiece, of course, is its computerized snowflake fountain, about as un-natural a water feature as there could be. But even at this monumental not-a-mall, there had to be a red rock-lined creek. Maybe to remind us of Utah’s many non-shopping activities. shopthegateway.com

YouTube Titans
Heroic, entertaining and just plain weird videos from Utah’s youtube.com stars gone viral

Utahns save motorcyclist from burning wreckage

Uploaded: Sept. 13, 2011 Views: Reposted all over Internet, but top hitters are in the 45,000 range. The gist: The Hulk has nothing on more than a dozen people who braved the flames to lift a car off of USU student Brandon Wright. Student Chris Graff caught the rescue footage from the top floor of the nearby Eccles Business Building.

MPH Math

Uploaded: Dec. 16, 2011 Views: more than 6,245,883 The gist: Sometimes numbers are just plumb hard—especially when you’re speeding down the highway. Just ask Logan resident Chelsea Chambers, who was confounded when hubby Travis posed this question: “If you are traveling 80 mph, how long does it take to go 80 miles?” Chelsea’s personal running speed, wheel rotations per hour and tire air density all factored into her reasoning, yet 80 miles was never achieved as an answer.

Slip Slidin’ in Bountiful

Uploaded: Jan. 21, 2012 Views: more than 2,915,035 The gist: The moral—stay away from 400 North in Bountiful after a snowstorm. Local Rhee Braby captured nearly 30 cars smashing into curbs, front yards and each other in an icy, demolition-derby-style commute.

Jazz for Cows

Uploaded: Sept. 6, 2011 Views: more than 5,401,106 The gist: BYU professor Steve Call and his five-piece jazz band put on a show for a herd of cows in Autrans, France. Watch cows mosey from the pasture toward the tunes from the first note of When the Saints Go Marching In.

Sh*z Mormons Say

Uploaded: Jan. 14, 2012 Views: more than 438,571 The gist: Youtuber Stephen Jones gives a rundown of LDS-inspired versions of common phrases. Two of our favorites: “Son of a bishop” and “Holy Hannah Montana.” Check out Jones’ video promoting BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library, too.

Lazy Jedi

Uploaded: Jan. 11, 2012 Views: more than 1,143,305 The gist: In this video, BYU students Mike Brown and Landon and Casey Sperry prove that being a Jedi doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a morning person. Jedi played by Dave Ackerman.
