THE KID TAKES OVER: EBAY AT KRCL
KRCL has been a major part of Ebay Jamil Hamilton’s life ever since he was 13 years old, and now that he’s the station’s music director, it’s his top priority. We sat down with the music junkie and midday host to find out what his life is like at the public station in SLC.
How did you get started at KRCL?
“In 1992, I was involved in a summer youth program that paid kids to work in nonprofits. My mom said, ‘Why don’t you go apply for that radio station you listen to?’ I’ve been here ever since.”
Did you ever try commercial radio?
“Six years ago, I started doing part time work for U92. I was there three years, and then this position opened up.”
What does the music director actually do?
“We receive music from all genres, so I spend the bulk of my time reviewing music and uploading songs to our digital library. I have a good 200 records I’d love to listen to in the next month, and 10 to 20 more show up in the mail every day.”
Any memorable moments you'd like to mention?
“One of my favorite artists is Martin Sexton, and he’s been by the station. I got the chance to shake his hand and thank him for all the music he's made."
