The spectacle started early—though with all the closed-door meetings, not many got to see it. It appeared that redistricting themselves into eternal majority and possibly eliminating the state's one Democrat in Congress was a priority for Utah Republicans. By the time they finished carving up the state, there wasn't a district left without a hefty patch of sagebrush and a conservative tilt.
Now, a handful of Republican lawmakers have delusions of a grander life in Congress or the governor's office. Orem rep. Stephen Sandstrom, Herriman Rep. Carl Wimmer, Bountiful Rep. Dan Liljenquist and former Rep. Craig Frank won't be able to resist cheap tricks and overblown stunts to kick-start their campaigns.
