Congrats to the 12 couples getting married for free, and congrats to the grooms for not having to worry about their first wedding anniversary for another three years! This is only possible in leap years.
K-Bull 93's Morning Moo Crew is hosting the very first K-Bull 93 Leap of Faith Wedding starting at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at the XSI Factory in Lehi. Twelve couples were chosen from hundreds that applied online with their love stories.
With Shotgun Jackson hosting the wedding, Mayor Dan Snarr of Murray City will perform the ceremony as the couples leap and bounce. Each couple will also receive titanium wedding bands from Jonathan's Jewelry, a Spa Club gift certificate, a free bouquet from Tulip Tree Floral, a photo from Blackburn Studio and a mini wedding cake from Swirly Girls Gourmet Bakery.
But why a free wedding for Leap Year?
We interviewed Tandy Baker, the K-Bull 93 Promotions Director, to find out:
Q: These weddings sounds very interesting, but what's the point?
A: "K-Bull 93 has done a mass wedding on Valentine's Day every year for the past 10 years. We've done 93 couples at a Jazz game, 20 couple at Cabela's in Lehi for a shotgun wedding, and 20 couples on the Carousel at the South Towne Mall. Since we have done in this past years, we had a large number of couples approach us (via Facebook, email and phone) wanting to get married with K-Bull 93 on Valentine's Day. However, we weren't able to do one on Valentine's Day this year because of a scheduling conflict, so we thought 'let's have our couples take the big leap of faith and get married on Leap Year.'"
Q: Why do you think some people decide to get married on the Leap Day?
A: "The guys like it because they only have to remember their anniversary every four years. The girls like it because it makes the date of their wedding special and gives both of them a good story to tell their kids and grandkids. Also, some of the couples feel that they can't afford a big wedding, so this is a way for them to get that without having to spend thousands of dollars to do it."
Murray Mayor Dan Snarr
Q: Why did you pick Mayor Dan Snarr as someone to perform the ceremony? What was his reaction to being asked?
A: "Mayor Snarr has performed a couple of marriages for us in the past, and he's always been very happy to do it. He was very excited about the idea. Normally his schedule on Valentine's Day doesn't permit him to participate, but on Leap Year he was free."
Q: Do you still keep in touch with couples from past years?
A: "We have had many of our previous couples contact us from our first wedding on Valentine's Day 10 years ago. Many of them are still going strong and they still have really great memories of that day."
