The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, an award-winning museum exhibiting five galleries of groundbreaking artwork from a variety of local and international artists, is encouraging people to explore the world of contemporary art with the return of their flagship program, Art Fitness Training.
Occurring over three consecutive Saturdays (two in SLC and one in Provo), the program will emphasize close observation and easily understood principles in order to give all audiences a greater ability to appreciate contemporary art.
As Adam Price, executive director at UMOCA puts it, “This is a great chance for anyone who wants to walk into a museum or gallery with confidence, impress their friends with their ability to make sense of contemporary art, or just look darn good standing around an exhibition opening.”
The class is designed for adults, and has had great success in helping participants overcome their feelings of inadequacy when confronted with a piece of contemporary art. One participant explained, “I now feel liberated—I can walk into a museum and look at art in a different way without relying on someone else to do it for me.”
UMOCA wants people to feel confident in their own powers of intelligent observation and to embrace those difficult contemporary works that intimidate them. They have tailored the Art Fitness Training program to do just that for its participants.
