Whether we lived it or not, we all have a mind’s eye picture of Thanksgiving: several generations of family gathered together for the day, seated at a table around a big roasted turkey. In truth, the great cultural feast of the United States has become as complicated as its culture. My own family, gathered together for a feast, includes a few traditional turkey-eaters, a couple of raw foodists, some vegetarians, vegans, lactose-intolerants and celiac sprue sufferers and a teenager who has never (to our knowledge) eaten a green vegetable. Twenty-four pounds of turkey meat are superfluous. But of course, feasting is never about the menu. It’s about the people. So here are some alternatives to the traditional holiday menu. It’s changing, but the gathering remains the same.
