This is the poster designed by Austin counterculture artist Jim Franklin (he's one who put the armadillo in Austin) to advertise a Leo Kottke show in 1971.
The image was inspired by a Kottke quote: “Vaseline Machine Gun—For waking up nude in a sleeping bag on the shore of the Atlantic surrounded by a volleyball game at high noon, and for the end of the volleyball game.”
Don't ask me what that means. Anyone who ever knew has undoubtedly forgotten.
What I do remember is the magic of that concert at Armadillo World Headquarters and the mindblowing performance of Leo Kottke, one of the most amazing guitar pickers of all time.
His singing is amazing, too, but in a different way. He once described his voice as sounding like "geese farts on a muggy day."
At any rate, don't miss hearing this American original at the Egyptian Theater in Park City, March 8. 9 and 10.
