Fall isn’t so much a season for me as it is a waiting game. You know the moment in late August or early September when summer fades just a little bit, letting you know fall is on the way? From then until the resorts open, I am itching for it to snow so I can ski. At this time of the year however, multiple powder days have gratefully erased all that early-season angst and what I’m pining for is skiing corn, live music and drinking a cold beer somewhere outside in the sun. One of my favorite venues for getting my springtime apres ski on is Canyons’ Ski Beach.

If you’ve skied or ridden Canyons in the last couple of years, you’ve seen the Ski Beach: rows of orange beach chairs lined up at the base of the Canyons’ Orange Bubble Express chairlift. Here you can grab a beer and Hot and Spicy hot dog at the Umbrella Bar and then sip and soak up the sun while your kids mess around in the snow. It’s really the best of both worlds: The kids are happy and occupied and unless you’re from another planet, there’s no good reason you shouldn’t enjoy this scene, too.

On most weekend days in March, Canyons Ski Beach takes on a mini carnival atmosphere complete with roving magicians, jugglers and balloon artists. Kids can meet and pet Canyons’ Mountain Patrol canine search and rescue dogs or raptors from the Ogden Nature Center. Canyons’ mascot, Murdock the Moose, leads a parade through the village on most afternoons as well. The festivities culminate on March 23 with Canyons’ Pond Skimming contest, the highlight of the resort’s annual Spring Grüv celebration. (If you go, be sure to step out in the kookiest costume you own as both skimmers and spectators go all out for this annual event.)

The icing on the cake is Canyons’ free live concert series. Performances are held at the Canyons’ village music stage from 3 to 5 p.m. This year’s lineup includes:

March 2: Patwa Reggae Band
March 9: Trezz Hombres
March 16: The Drunken Hearts
March 23: North Mississippi Allstars
March 24: Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band
March 30: Toots & the Maytals
March 31: Euforquestra
April 6: The Pour Horse
