Mere birthright alone doth not a Utahn create. What makes a true local? We say it is not the number of years you've lived within Zion's borders, but rather the zeal with which you explore all our state has to offer. If you're new, or if you're questioning your right to citizenship, we're here to help, with this refresher course. Every other week, we'll bring you a quintessential Utah-to-do experience. Check back for another to check off your list.

Jamie Burnham, The Beer Nut manager

For a state known for restrictions on alcohol, we have an awesome beer culture. Local brewers have made a habit of snatching up awards in national competitions, and those who are really passionate make their own.

Start your adventure in home brewing by picking up the beer beginners’ Bible, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, at The Beer Nut. Also available at this local beer mecca is all the equipment you'll need, along with wine and soda making supplies.

When you're confident in your brewing skills, enter the Beehive Brewoff. Registration for the event, organized by The Beer Nut, ends on July 31. Click here for more info.

The Beer Nut is located at 1200 S. State Street, SLC.
