As we head full-bore into winter, it's time to readdress - and possibly even rearrange - your skincare routine. Healthy skin is the best base for flawless makeup, and the best news is, if your skin is healthy you can get away with wearing less of it. 

Practice these few easy habits each day to give your skin the care it needs to be dewy instead of dull, no matter the season.

Cleansing at least once a day is essential. You should always cleanse to remove makeup each night before going to bed. Skin regenerates itself at night, and if it's covered in makeup, it's the perfect breeding ground for breakouts. In the winter especially, look for a cleanser that's not too drying. Use it daily as a foaming cleanser, and at least once a week, let it sit for a couple minutes to do its work as a mask.

We've already addressed the importance of moisturizer, but during the winter months, it's particularly vital. Cold temps and harsh weather conditions can quickly strip skin of moisture, so be sure to apply it every day before your makeup.

You might not realize the necessity to exfoliate, but it really is important. Exfoliating helps the skin to shed its dead layers, refine its texture and leave it smooth and refreshed. Exfoliate weekly, and if you have sensitive skin, do a test run on a small area of your face first.


Don't forget that healthy skin starts from the inside. If your body isn't hydrated, your skin won't be either. Even if you're not out in the sun all day, you still need adequate hydration. The more water you drink, the better your skin will feel.

Sugar attacks the proteins in your skin that give it a youthful appearance, and excess sugar can cause dullness, sagginess and even speed up the wrinkling process.


Makeup brushes can get yucky fast, especially if you're using long-wearing products that coat the bristles. Avoid depositing unhealthy oils and old makeup onto your skin by cleaning your brushes once a week. You can do this with a makeup brush cleaner or by simply using the same gentle cleanser you use to clean your face. Gently wet the brush with warm water, apply a small amount of cleaner and lather it up using your fingertips. Take care not to crush or pull the bristles, as that can cause breakage. Lay the brushes flat and allow them to airdry.
