When Park City begins moonlighting as a satellite outpost for all of Hollywood this week, let’s not forget this ski town’s roots in—you know—actual skiing.

From Jan. 17–18, Park City Mountain Resort will host the last stop of the Visa U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix in the King’s Crown Park and the Eagle Superpipe. You’re sure to see a high caliber of airborne tricks on the slopestyle course and in the pipe, but it’s more than just eye candy during this free, weekend-long event: It’s also the final qualifying stop for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, where freeskiing (slopestyle and halpipe disciplines) will make its Olympic debut.

Local favorites Tom Wallisch, Joss Christensen and Alex Schlopy are expected to compete alongside the likes of Simon Dumont, David Wise and Angeli VanLaanen. And while these names might not mean much right now, it’s likely you’ll know them once the U.S. Olympic Freeskiing Team is announced on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 18, at the conclusion of the halfpipe finals. It’s a prime event for winter sport fans that want to watch Olympic hopefuls without coughing up a plane ticket to Sochi.

Following the Olympic team selection on Jan. 18, Park City Mountain Resort will host a free on-mountain concert by O.A.R. (who are also performing at Park City Live on Jan. 16 for $40). All events are free to the public, but the slopestyle events on King’s Crown aren’t spectator-friendly. The Eagle Superpipe at the base of the resort, however, will likely be packed with people.

If you don’t feel like braving the chaos in Park City this weekend, the event will be streaming live at, with TV coverage on NBC throughout the weekend.
