It's bathing suit season, and the last thing you want to worry about is shaving everyday, especially around your sensitive bikini area. Brazilian waxing is quick and less painful (and less embarrassing) than you think, and it lasts much longer than shaving, too.

Michelle Kobernik, Got Beauty's Lead Master Aesthetician, has 12 years of experience waxing and makes Brazilians a breeze. We chatted with Michelle this week for a little Q&A guide to what Got Beauty calls "The Best Brazilian North of Rio."

Michelle Kobernik, Got Beauty's Brazilian Waxing Expert

SLM: What are the benefits of waxing compared to shaving or other hair removal methods?
MK: Waxing lasts longer than shaving because you pull the hair out from the roots, and there are no cuts or nicks like you get from a razor. You will find that with regular waxing your hairs become finer and grow slower. The best thing about waxing is your skin is so smooth, no stubble! It is very important to avoid shaving between waxing appointments, as this will interrupt the process and stimulate the hair growth again.

SLM: What's the best way to prepare for a waxing appointment?
MK: Be sure you have at least a 1/4 inch of hair growth, 1/2 inch for course hair. That's usually about seven to ten days of growth if you’ve been shaving. Soft hair follicles release hair more easily, thus making the waxing process less painful. So it is helpful to exfoliate with a loofah or exfoliating gloves the day before waxing. As far as pain medication goes, I don’t suggest it. If it’s your first time please let us know and we will walk you through every step.

SLM: What should a client expect from her appointment?
MK: Hairless skin! Everyone’s skin reacts differently to waxing treatments, but you can expect to have temporary redness and minor irritation for a day or two. Try to avoid heavy exercise that will increase perspiration and chaffing for about 24-48 hours after waxing.

SLM: How often does a client need to follow up?
MK: Regular waxing is essential. Most clients come in every four weeks. The skin will be less sensitive and the hair becomes finer if waxing is done every four weeks.

SLM: What is the best way to prevent ingrown hairs between appointments?
MK: I suggest exfoliating with a loofah and exfoliating gloves, alternating between the two. Some people are more prone to ingrown hairs, in which case adding a topical exfoliant is a must. My favorite go to is a miracle product at Got Beauty called Tend Skin. I would definitely add it to your exfoliation program.

SLM: Any other important pieces of advice for waxing?
MK: Breathe and relax! The experience is super quick and speedy... and if you do have sensitive skin, any pain is very minor and very temporary! Keep the waxed area protected from direct sunlight for 12 hours, no hot baths, hot tubs, or community pools for 24 hours. Should irritation occur, use an antibiotic ointment, aloe vera, or hydrocortisone cream to keep the area moist and to avoid infection.
