Blain Hefner Solo Art Show

The IJ & Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center welcomes Blain Hefner on Oct. 3 in his first solo art show in more than a decade. The show is titled "Monsters, Movies & The Dud" and will feature drawings, paintings and retro movie posters celebrating Hefner's love of popular culture in film and television.

The opening reception will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the gallery on the second floor lobby of the community center located at 2 North Medical Drive, Salt Lake City.  The show runs from Oct. 1 through 30.

UMOCA Battleground States

Utah Museum of Contemporary Art's newest exhibit, Battleground States, brings together local, national and international artists who are exploring how figuration, the body and identity intertwine. Using a variety of mediums, the narrative of the exhibit marches through fusions, ambiguities and disconnections between the figure and the self.

Utah artist Trevor Southey serves as the entryway launching pad for reflection and discussion as visitors go through the exhibit.

Utah Marathon and Fittest State Festival

The Utah Marathon will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 13 as part of the inaugural Fittest State Festival.  Utah is currently the fourth-fittest state in the nation but is aiming to be the first according to Scott Kerr, CEO of The Utah marathon and Fittest State Festival.  Registration and packet pick up will be open starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 and will close at 7:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.  Events will begin Saturday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 a.m.  There will be a variety of events including a bike tour, various marathons, and a children’s walk.

Ms. Sims has performed around the world in North America, Europe, China and South Africa and has received considerable critical acclaim. YMCA DishEd Gala

The first annual YMCA DishED Gala will be held on Oct. 17 from 6-9 p.m. at the Grand Hall in the Union Pacific Depot at the Gateway. Nancy Holt: Sightlines

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to present the work of Nancy Holt in a new, retrospective exhibition titled “Nancy Holt: Sightlines.” Nancy is is one of the most significant American artists from the 1960s and 1970s.  Her famous sculpture, “Sun Tunnels” is located in Utah's Great Basin and her new exhibit will continue challenge and transform the traditional understanding of landscape.

There will be an Exhibition Preview for University of Utah and UMFA Members at 5 p.m. followed by a Public Artist Talk by Nancy at 6 p.m. and ending with a community celebration at 7 p.m.

This training is designed for managers and supervisors who want to help their employees resolve conflict by facilitating resolution conferences. During this workshop, participants will learn basic facilitation skills to serve as a third party to the dispute. Of Mice and Men

Pioneer Theatre Company is excited to present John Steinbeck's “Of Mice and Men,” Oct. 19-Nov. 3. The all-Equity cast stars Joe Tapper as George and Mark David Watson as Lennie.

Jog for Jill 5K

On Oct. 20 the University of Utah’s campus will be hosting one of 12 Jog for Jill events.  Jog for Jill is an 5K event held by the young advisory board of the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, called Jill’s Legacy, and raises money and awareness for lung cancer, which is the number one cancer killer.  The event will be held at Presidents Circle on the University of Utah campus and will be attended by many University of Utah students as well as Salt Lake City and Park City residents.  For more information or to register, please visit the website.

Remembrance and Reflection

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Join the Salt Lake Choral Artists for an evening of remembrance with Utah premieres of Donald Patriquin's "Titanic Requiem" and Ola Gjeilo's "Surise Mass," works that allow listeners to find the redemption and compassion that comes after suffering. Also included is the deeply moving "Agnus Dei" by Samuel Barber, a choral setting of his well-known "Adagio for Strings," and Stephen Paulus' "Little Elegy." The Rocky Horror Picture Show with Shadowcast

Is everyone ready to Time Warp again? You'd better be because it's that time of year again. Time to put on your corsets and fishnets and take that step to the right. Join the Latter Day Transvestites at the Tower Theatre as we bring you the best (or worst) in absolute pleasure! On October 26, the festivities and fun begin at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. On October 27, Frank will seduce you at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. And our final sins of the season will be held on Halloween night at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. As always: Pre-show begins 30 minutes before showtimes.

No outside props will be allowed except squirt guns, flashlights, newspaper and toilet paper. The cast will be selling prop kits with rice, toast, newspaper, cards and mini squirt guns for $3 each. All proceeds go to the Out of the Shadows Theater Group for updating/repairing props and costumes. Get your tickets early.

The Tower will begin selling them on October 1, 2012 for $10. All proceeds go to the Salt Lake Film Society. And don't forget the Pelvic Thrust!

Celebrate the Spirits 5K

Help others by running in the Celebrate the Spirits 5K charity event held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.  Participants will be encouraged to trick-or-treat at tents along the route and all proceeds will be donated to Camp Hobe, a non-profit organization that provides summer camp for kids with a cancer and their siblings. The start line is at Basin Recreation Field House and the course will go out and back along the East 224 Connector Trail.

Registration is $45 a family or $20 a runner.  Registered runners receive an event shirt while supplies last.

Ogden Witchstock Halloween Celebration

Historic 25th Street in Ogden is gearing up for Halloween! Utah Symphony: "Halloween Hi-Jinks"
