Tracy Aviary's Winter Wednesdays

Tracy Aviary is open year-round, so why not take advantage of the slower season by getting to spend more quality time with the birds?

Without the bustling crowds of the summer, Tracy Aviary is a beautiful place to come relax next to some roaming peafowl, watch the Keas play with all kinds of new toys, and hide out in the tropical warmth of the South American Pavilion. Free-flight encounters are held in a beautiful, heated space as well, so be sure to check that out!

And what’s the best part of all of this? On Wednesdays, November through March, admission is only $1! That dollar goes entirely toward conservation efforts to help ensure the continuation of endangered species protection programs, so you’re not only getting to visit Tracy Aviary; you’re also getting to help save the birds! Come on in, and expect to see some special surprises coming soon to Tracy Aviary!

In this up-close presentation, Josh Taylor, Executive Chef at LDS Hospital, will share his culinary expertise and passion for transforming fresh produce into delicious meals. The end of the growing season is upon us—this program will help patrons find healthy ways to cook the foods they can find at the end of the Farmer’s Market or from the harvest of their own gardens.

Veteran's Day Artist Reception

Soldier Boy. Soldier Girl. Photographs by Lynn Blodgett and Veteran’s Artwork curated with help from the National Ability Center.

Lynn’s dramatically lit portraits feature two ‘soldiers,’ one male, one female, dressed in the military uniforms of every war fought by the United States. While the technology and clothing change from image to image, the two models remain the same, symbolizing the constant human element of warfare. Even as the style and appearance of war is modified over time, the bravery, valor and sacrifice of soldiers never falters. Lynn’s work shows the dignity of the armed forces throughout America’s history, and visually represents how the cost of conflict does not change.

Family Counseling Center Breakfast with Robert Kirby

The Family Counseling Center invites you to the Community of Hope breakfast with The Salt Lake Tribune columnist and author Robert Kirby. Breakfast will be served. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required.

Please call the Family Counseling Center at 801-261-3500 or email us at: fcc1@xmission.com to RSVP.

The Family Counseling Center is the only nonprofit agency of its kind in the Salt Lake Valley to offer a full array of professional mental health services to children, teens and adults on a sliding-fee scale basis. The majority of its clients are the working poor or are uninsured and many pay nothing at all.

Salt Lake Tribune humor columnist Robert Kirby was raised in a military family. Following an LDS mission to South America, Kirby became a police officer. He left law enforcement in 1989 to pursue the idiotic notion of becoming a writer.

Robert has written for the Tribune since 1994.

Wine & Whiskey for Whiskers! #MovemberSLC event

This month, the SLC network campaign for Movember USA has partnered up with one of the city's swankiest spaces—The Chalk Garden Co-op, Lunatic Fringe, spaDAY, and The Art of Shaving to give the gentlemen of Movember (and ladies of course!) a reason to dress up, and pledge to spread awareness for the campaign.

On Nov. 26, they invite you to share an evening of "Wine & Whiskey for Whiskers." Sugar House Libations will be slinging new winter cocktails, and hors d'oeuvre style bites will be provided from local venders. Raffle items and silent auction merchandise will be up for grabs, so bring your wallets.

Many local businesses are helping to sponsor the event and support the worthy cause:The State Room, United Concerts, Alta , Zuriick, Nick Olsen-Personal Trainer, Ulysses, and 9th & 9th Pilates to name a few.

Last but not least, there will also be a MOUSTACHE CONTEST, so fellows, bring your 'game faces'! Join us! :
