Free Documentary Screening: The Central Park Five

Ken Burns' new film "The Central Park Five," documents questions of race and misjustice that are as relevant today as they were 20 years ago.  In 1989, five men were wrongly accused of a crime and spent 6-13 years in prison until the true perpetrator was found and convicted in 2002. This Through the Lens series film presented by Radio West, Utah Film Center and KUED Channel 7 truly looks through the lens of race relations in America.

The documentary airs on PBS next month. This free screening on Apr. 3, begins at 7:00 p.m. with seating available first-come first-served. Co-directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon will be on hand for Q&A.

UCSA Sword Fighting Competition

Hacking and slashing are what you usually think of when sword fighting. Thank you, Hollywood.  In fact, this ancient martial arts of sorts incorporates complex techniques and moves that are only limited by the body's range of motion. The United Clans Swordsman Association (USCA) studies historical texts and rediscovers authentic sword fighting practices of centuries ago. And now is your chance to see it live!

USCA will hold its first bi-annual sword fighting competition at Liberty Park, April 13, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Participation is limited to members of the UCSA but all are welcome to watch the event on the park's east side. Regular classes are held every Saturday from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. by the east side stone pillars of the park.

How to Succeed in the Arts: Collaboration of Sponsors Puts on a Business Workshop for Artists

It's like How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying! Except for the music. And you still might have to try, but the Utah Lawyers for the Arts (ULA) and Dance Theatre Coalition (DTC) in partnership with the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) want to make it easier for all artists who long to shape their talents into full-fledged careers. They will be hosting a business seminar focused on helping artists improve their business practices on Saturday, April 27 at the UMOCA from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

The career development workshop will be divided into three parts: 1) the ins and outs of contract negotiation. 2) A breakdown of the professional writing process. 3) editing help for those wishing for feedback from a skilled outside perspective. This seminar is sure to prove extremely helpful for all artists of all mediums.

Tower Theater Shows Local Documentary "Raising Fluffy"

Fluffy is an odd name to give an emperor scorpion, especially one that becomes a 55-foot metallic scale replica of this animal.  Salt Lake's Kirk Jellum found a new use for his aerospace engineering skills by building "art cars" for an art party known as Burning Man. Fluffy was a project that had to go from idea to finished product in just seven months, and SLC filmmaker Mike Call captured this whole process in a new documentary. This film captures the creativity of one group in Salt Lake's eclectic and thriving art scene.

"Raising Fluffy" is screening at Tower Theater for cast, crew and the public on Apr. 30, at 7:00 p.m.
