Garden Maintenance

Gardens grow, and that can be both a blessing and a curse. The fresh young blooms of spring fade, stalks bend and droop, groundcover runs amok, and spent flowers turn brown on their stems. What's a gardener to do? With a little maintenance know-how, you can extend the bloom of some favorite perennials, get a second bloom from others, control invasive plantings, prop or strengthen weak stems, and overall neaten your summer and fall garden. Join us for three evenings in the garden as we get hands-on experience deadheading, pruning, thinning, dividing, and transplanting—and keep your garden looking grand all season long. Raivo Puusemp: Dissolution

Raivo Puusemp's collection of press clippings, council meeting minutes and public documents from his brief stint as mayor of Rosendale (1975-1976), a small village, plagued by an overbearing tax structure and problems with its municipal utilities. Puusemp saw his position as an opportunity to take a political problem and morph it into artwork. The attempt was made to superimpose a formal concept upon an essentially directionless, political micro-system and to affect that system permanently by doing so.

Film Screening: Herman's House

Herman Wallace may be the longest-serving prisoner in solitary confinement in the United States—he's spent more than 40 years in a 6-by-9-foot cell in Louisiana. Imprisoned in 1967 for a robbery he admits, he was subsequently sentenced to life for a killing he vehemently denies. Herman's House is a moving account of the remarkable expression his struggle found in an unusual project proposed by artist Jackie Sumell. The film takes us inside the duo's unlikely 12-year friendship, revealing the transformative power of art. Premiering on PBS's POV July 8, 2013.

An exciting interactive feature of AmberMay parties is the Flirt Mail Board- tacked with envelopes marked with numbers corresponding to each party guest (assigned at the door), the Flirt Mail Board allows minglers to leave messages for each other they're not ready to deliver in person.

Matchmakers and founders Amber Holcombe and Baya Voce will be on hand, facilitating introductions between guests, as well as gathering questionaire information to enter participants into AmberMay's database free of charge.

"This is an organic way to meet people," Voce says to people who think dating services are only for a certain "type." "If you're not in your twenties, not out going to clubs, it's not that easy," she says, siting priorities and time restraints as obstacles when looking for someone special.
