September Artist Exhibition

The Jewish Community Center (JCC) will be displaying the art of Khaled Salem, a Palestinian from Jordan who eventually found himself in Utah with the desire to self express and bring people together. "Art allows the view to catch a glmipse of an artist's soul and hopefully a commen sense of humanity. There we can find similarities rather than differences. Maybe, even in a small way, art can bring Palestinians and Jews together," said Salem.

Salem's watercolor paintings will be held on display from Sept. 2 through sept. 30. The reception will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Jewish Community Center Features Khaled Salem

The I.J. & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center is excited to announce their September Art Exhibition. Khaled Salem's art exhibit started on Sept. 2 and will continue through Sept. 30.

Salem is a Palestinian who grew up in Amman, Jordan. At a young age, Salem was never encouraged to pursue a hobby, or even a career, in art due to the cultural attitudes towards art at that time. “Today, I realize this was a blessing because I was not molded into a style which was not an expression of myself,” Salem said in a press release.

When Salem's family moved to Italy following his high school graduation, the European lifestyle and culture had an astonishing impact on many facets of his artistic creativity and development. As he matured, Salem found it important to express what he was feeling inside and he practiced just that as he took guitar lessons and as a film student at University of Utah after moving to American in 1989.

Salem started his painting career at age 33 when he attended the Peters Art Center where he was encouraged to improve his articles abilities under the guidance of Harold Petersen, his teacher and mentor whom he dedicates this exhibit to.

San Francisco Bridge by Khaled Salem

The exhibit will feature watercolors by Salem as he feels that this medium brings out his intuitive nature, something that he finds is most important for self-expression. “I like to think my work has primitive and childlike qualities, and hope with time I can further develop it,” Salem said.

Khaled Salem's reception will be on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 4 - 6:00 p.m. where everyone is welcome.

Fly Fishing 101

Wednesday, 09/11/13, 6–8 p.m., Saturday, 09/14/13, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Utah offers an array of excellent rivers for fly fishing. This class is a chance to get out and try the sport in a beautiful high mountain setting. Designed for the novice, this basic hands-on course explores the art and mechanics of fly fishing, including equipment, safety, knots, entomology, and, of course, casting. We will learn some basics in the classroom then travel to a local river for the day to test our new skills. You are responsible for providing your rod and reel (can be rented at local fly shops), fishing license, sack lunch, sunglasses (essential for eye protection), and either waders and boots or clothes and shoes that can get wet. A selection of flies and other tackle will be provided for our river day. This class is limited to 10. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.

Presentation: Tar Sands and Climate Justice on the Wasatch Front

Join Peaceful Uprising for a presentation about an issue that's seriously impacting our air!

Tar sands are asphalt-like deposits, and mining and refining them is a last-ditch effort to extract usable fuel from the earth. It's pretty much the dirtiest energy imaginable—yes, refining it is even worse for our air quality than refining regular crude.

Tar sands refining has already begun in North Salt Lake, at the Chevron refinery, which processes tar sands from Canada. Now, tar sands mining could begin in eastern Utah in the coming year—unless we stop it, by building the popular resistance against it!

We'll give a presentation on what tar sands and climate justice are, and how this struggle is part of the broader movement for climate justice. We'll talk about the effects of tar sands mining and refining on our health, and what the campaign has been doing so far.

Then, we'll open a space for asking questions, and for sharing concerns, knowledge, and ideas!

Cache Valley Melt Mobile Tour's Final Stop

After a busy summer serving up free grilled cheese sandwiches and spreading the word about the fight against hunger in Utah, the Cache Valley® Melt Mobile tour is coming to a close. This weekend is the last opportunity for visitors to grab some goodies and learn more about the company’s cheese and butter. The stop will feature a donation bin to collect nonperishables for the Utah Food Bank. People can also donate grocery items or money via utahfoodbank.com/cachevalleycheese.

The Cache Valley Melt Mobile aims to help Cache Valley connect with its neighbors, and raise awareness of Cache Valley Cares, a partnership with the Utah Food Bank to help fight hunger. Introduced last year, the Cache Valley Melt Mobile food truck was a big hit at local events—traveling 1,059 miles and serving more than 23,000 grilled cheese samples. Last year alone, Cache Valley donated more than $20,000 to the Utah Food Bank, which helped provide more than 7,800 meals and feed thousands of local families.
