The American Cancer Society raised $13,500 for the Young Cancer Survivor College Scholarship program and a projected $75,000 all-together at the Babe Golf Tournament held at the Hidden Valley Country Club on June 5. The Babe was started 37 years ago by the Long Island, New York division of American Cancer Society in honor of athlete Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias, who excelled in a number of sports and died of colon cancer in 1956. Penny Zavichas, owner of the Craft-Zavichas Golf School and Zaharia’s niece was in attendance, along with the tournament’s honoree, Sallie Wingeleth, who has inspired the local golf community over the past year with her indomitable spirit. A luncheon was held for teams following the tournament.
