Entrepreneurs' Organization Utah, a group of 75 local business leaders, raised $45,000 to build a new middle school near Bamako, Mali during the last Sundance Film Festival. The group held a check presentation, attended by local news media, at Timpanogos Cyclery in Pleasant Grove on April 26. The school will be built by the Mali Rising Foundation, a non-profit organization that empowers children in Mali by expanding educational opportunities. Fred Johnson, Entrepreneurs' Organization Utah President and Mali Rising Chairperson, gave a speech on his recent trip to Mali and why the school is necessary. Middle school children in Mali usually have to walk 10 miles roundtrip to reach school daily, and the ratio of boys to girls is two to one. The new school will expand education opportunities for boys and girls and help eliminate gender disparities.
