SPJ Headliners Awards

The Utah Headliners chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists held an intimate awards ceremony at the Fort Douglas Officers Club at the University of Utah on June 20. Dinner was served by Isabella's Catering, and The Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby gave the keynote speech. The evening's emcees were Utah SPJ board members Tom Haraldson and Jim Fisher. Five honorary journalism awards were given to local journalists and Sunshine Awards, given to individuals who further transparency and open government, were awarded to Betsy Ross, who served as director of legal affairs in the Utah State Treasurer and Auditor's office, and Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Burbank. The Black Hole Award, given to an individual or entity for creating barriers to freedom of press, was awarded to the Utah Transit Authority for withholding information from local press.
