If you like word folk songs, heavy with euphemisms and literary historical references, have I got the show for you!
The Decembrists play Red Butte Tuesday night—their return to Salt Lake after a joyous 2015 show at the same venue.
The band, who basically encompass everything about Portland, represent their home city in every way, from their quirkiness to their too-twee fashion choices. This is a live show made for Red Butte. So much in fact, that the last time they played Salt Lake and Red Butte, lead Singer Colin Meloy entered the stage wearing a suit and with a glass of red wine in hand. The Decemberists are definitely outdoor concert people—they would fit in just as well on the lawn as on the stage.
This is music for smart people. Nay, this is music for people who think they’re smart. I mean, who doesn’t like an encore featuring a whale prop during the murder ballad/sea shanty “The Mariners Revenge?”
Say what you will, this is a band who has found their niche. I’ll see you at Red Butte, my fellow (you-think- you’re-so) smart people.
The Decemberists play Red Butte on Tuesday, August 15. Tickets are sold out.
