Concert Preview: Lyle Lovett and His Large Band at Red Butte

It just wouldn’t be outdoor summer concert season in Utah without an appearance by Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.

The tall, cool Texan isn’t for everyone—something I’ll never understand, to be honest—but he has found his niche in Utah by making an annual trek to the venues where women gather in large groups to drink white wine and gossip before shows. In other words, Lyle Lovett has found his people at Red Butte.

But make no mistake, there’s a reason people keep coming back for more. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band put on a heck of a show. From Lovett’s down home charm and dry humor, to singer Francine Reed’s vocals—and lordy, does she have them, to the sheer number of professional musicians on the stage, Lyle Lovett’s shows are well-run machines.

Veteran Lovett fans should expect the same quality of show and a similar setlist as they’ve seen before. Newcomers to the church of Lyle should expect a good time.

As for me, I’m a sucker for a stage full of men in suits. And even more for any song that starts with “She hates my mama, she hates my daddy, too.” In other words, this show was made for me.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band play Red Butte Garden on Friday, July 21. The show is sold out. Doors at 6:30, show at 7.
