Event Preview: Oil Fields

When you think of the currently ecological crisis we are facing, beauty isn’t something that initially comes to mind. In fact, the idea of greenhouse gas emissions probably makes most who live in Salt Lake think of the smog that hovers over Salt Lake like a noxious blanket all winter long. Salt Lake artist Ali Mitchell envisioned the concept of the depleting ozone and greenhouse gas emissions in another way. What started as a research project has now become a thought provoking exhibit that aims to challenge the viewer’s notion of beauty and destruction. Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts (MICA) is pleased to announce Oil Fields. This exhibition is made up of mixed media sculptures and a series of paintings by Ali Mitchell.

A previewing party will be held on Wednesday, September 13 from 7-9 pm at Mestizo Gallery 631 W. North Temple Suite 700. You will be able to check out the art and enjoy music, wine and light food before the exhibit formally opens. RSVP here.

A free event will also be held on Friday, September 15 from 6-9 pm during the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll. The opening reception will feature a short address by the Salt Lake Design Collective and Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. Items donated by Patagonia, The Front Climbing Club, and two local artists will be given away during the event.
