Hibernation Mode: 6 Ways to Beat This.

Being told to stay at home is bringing me back to my childhood, with mom or dad announcing sternly, “You’re grounded!” Like the time(s) that I was told not to do something and did it anyway. Hey, at seven, I didn’t fully realize that cutting the hair of my older sister’s barbie would have a permanent consequence. Nor at 15, when I told my parents that I was at my friend Carol’s when in actuality I was meeting to makeout with my friend Andy—and that Carol would blow my cover.

This all feels like a crazy punishment, doesn’t it? And while our mind knows that a pandemic is completely different, and we know that staying home and social distancing is needed to flatten that COVID-19 curve, how can we make the most of it? From my living space to yours, I’ll list some of my favorite self-care and homebound sanity preserving tips.


No commute, no school, good for you. We should all take advantage of a little extra sleep and if you can’t, extra quiet time to drink your coffee, read, meditate or exercise. If you need a workout, Rebel House is one of many local gyms offering online classes. 


All that hand washing has stripped the natural oils off my hands and ouch, that can’t be good. Along with a fragrance-free moisturizing lotion or cream, remember to drink H2O and take omega-3 fatty acids to keep hydrated inside as well.

Last week, I observed many people in the grocery store check out lines and wondered what they were thinking? Sure a pile of frozen burritos will get you through dude, but really? We need a diverse diet and fresh produce (and Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food ice cream counts). Step your sorry self outside and get a little sunshine. On your porch, around the block, walk, jog, skip. It’s been said the sun and fresh air is just about the best thing to do to boost your immunity right now.  

SELF-SPA therapy.

Create your very own spa space at home. Dry brush exfoliation followed by a steamy bath, deep condition those strands, or apply a facial mask (and you don’t have to buy one), there are plenty of skin and hair care recipes online made from kitchen staples. My favorite? The EGG. Apply the beaten egg, relax and wait 30 minutes, and rinse. Need more inspiration?


Just like when your parents issued that “time-out” there will be another side of this. So remind yourself to breathe, reach out if you’re lonely, and be well.
