Dance Review: Maks & Val & Peta at the Eccles

The first tour of Maks Chmerkovskiy and Val Chmerkovskiy was called Our Way. The duo took this tour to 45 cities and it was a whopping success. To follow that up, they added Peta Murgatroyd to mix and the story they told became even more personal, including the love story of Maks and Peta. They are taking this year’s tour to 50 cities. Unfortunately, they were only here in Salt Lake City for one night in the Eccles Theater.

From the moment Maks, Val and Peta came on stage the audience went crazy. All three dancers are known for their own styles of swagger and sexiness on and off the dance floor. When Maks and Val danced the women in the audience cheered and cheered ESPECIALLY when they opened their shirts or danced with them off. One woman behind me yelled “I so happy right now.”

Maks and Val talked a lot about this community and love of dance it has and how they have been here many times especially to Provo and BYU where many of the ballroom dancers have gone on to become big stars in shows like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance. Also many dancers from Utah have been winners in many, many national dance competitions.

With a really fun dance number with Maks and the dance troupe with  baby strollers, to very sexy dance numbers based around a Bachelorette Party, Val dancing while examining his life and then to the raw and vulnerable break-up story of Maks and Peta the evening was full of many emotions.

The break-up dance numbers were choreographed to some incredible music by Two Feet, Daughter and Billy Lockett. The emotions were so powerful in the break-up piece that when it ended, the audience didn’t really clap at first as if they felt they were clapping for something that was too painful. Fortunately we all knew that the story ended happily with Maks and Peta getting back together. They showed pictures from their wedding and a fun re-creation of their wedding day. The evening was personal and we in the audience truly enjoyed the intimate nature of the evening. It brought these dancing stars down to Earth.
