The ReduxNut-Cracker breathes new life into holiday classic

This year’s Odyssey Dance Theatre performance of the classic Nutcracker ballet will get an upgrade with The ReduxNut-Cracker. In the company’s original version, Clara receives a smartphone instead of a nutcracker for Christmas, and it only begins there. Contemporary twists and turns greet the audience at every turn throughout the dazzling performance. The ballet will be housed at three locations across Utah, including Kingsbury Hall on the University of Utah campus. The local show runs December 14 to 23 and tickets begin at $20 with other discounts available.

Bringing the tale into the 21st Century, the original Tchaikovsky score has been revamped with a pop/hip-hop twist, which will accompany modern elements tied into the famous story. Drawn into her smartphone to a magical world, Clara’s story is retold with her friend Drosselmeyer driving a DeLorean, the soldiers reimagined as robots and the mice sporting a new hip-hop flair.
