Review: Ballet West's Madame Butterfly

The Madame Butterfly choreographed by Staton Welch and premiered by Ballet West is breathtaking, haunting and heartbreaking.

Cio Cio San (Butterfly), danced by Arolyn Williams, is delicate and shy. Rex Tilton danced the role of Pinkerton as strong, powerful and cocky—which the role required. It made for an incredible partnering between Pinkerton and Butterfly during the love scene. Williams has been recognized in Dance magazine for her “ability to fly through the most technical of challenges.”

The supporting cast, costumes, staging and lighting were a perfect backdrop to the story.

Ballet West Orchestra offered a strong performance of Puccini’s music with it’s famous haunting aria.

The audience approved of this Madame Butterfly by giving the dancers six curtain calls. Performances run Nov. 9 – 12 at the Capitol Theatre.
