Salt Lake magazine poll: The Utah Jazz vs Hamilton

On Sunday, April 29, Hamilton’s leading man Joseph Morales popped off on his Twitter account at intermission during a matinee at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City.

”SLC, you’re killing me,” Morales posted. “Put your phones away. We can see you. This isn’t a movie. What’s up with you guys.”

Joseph Morales

Morales’ Tweet was responded to with much clucking and affirmation over how untoward cell phone use is ruining, I SAY, RUINING live theater. And it is. Also Salt Lakers showing up the the theater in cargo pants and flip flops isn’t helping either. So yeah, duh, the actor’s right. Put away your cell phones. Knuckleheads.

HOWEVER, the Sunday performance of Hamilton coincided with Game 1 of the second round of the NBA Playoffs featuring (what you live under a rock?) the beloved Utah Jazz vs. the hated Houston Rockets. So naturally Jazz fan Tim Ormond made like Aaron Burr and fired off this shot:

“Jazz in the NBA playoffs … deal with it. You’re not the biggest show in town,” Ormond opined.

Joseph Morales

Uh-oh. Cheeky.

As the blows of angry pro-Hamilton Tweeters rained down upon him, Mr. Ormond quickly cried uncle and walked back his joke.

“I clearly didn’t understand musical theater ettiqute (sic).  I have been educated since I wrote my initial tweet.  I have also been threatened and personally attacked by the Hamilton cyberbully squad.  I think we’re all even at this point.”

(Also Tim, don’t double space after periods. We’re not doing that anymore.)

Just then, the Jazz’ social media team rode in on a white horse with this little ditty:

“1) Correct. 2) You can check the score after you get out of the theater. 3) We’re not throwing away our shot.”

And thus peace was restored in the land. Or … was it? Hamilton’s run continues through May 6, 2018 and hopefully, prayerfully, the Jazz playoff run will continue as well. And, AND, on Friday night, both the game and the play will be on. Oh it’s on like Donkey Kong.

Head to Salt Lake magazine’s Facebook page or our Twitter feed (if that’s your bag) and vote in our polls. <Insert joke about throwing away a shot, here.> But for real, turn off your phones during Hamilton or any live theater production. You knuckleheads.
