Sweet Endings: San Diablo Churros

If you’ve spent any amount of time in Spain, Portugal, or a variety of South American countries, then you are probably familiar with the pleasure of a real, good churro. These treasures can be difficult to find in the US, unless you are (somehow) satisfied with the frozen variety found at fairs and other concessions. San Diablo Churros is on a mission to share them with all Utahans.

San Diablo started up back in fall 2016 serving up churros to Cornbelly’s visitors at Thanksgiving Point. Since then, the churros have been featured at all kinds of events and pop-ups around the valley. You can now find them at the Gateway and Honey Bee Produce in Draper.

The fresh sticks of fried dough are served warm, coated in fresh-ground cinnamon and sugar. Order off the “secret” menu to get your churro diablo- or inferno-style, adding increasing levels of spice to the mix. On top of that, you can choose a filling for your churro. You can always choose from dulce de leche, sweet cream, and Nutella, but there are also seasonal flavors to sample.

The options are endless, with past flavors including black velvet, firework (coated with popping candy), buckeye, and mint brownie. At certain special events, you can even get adventurous and add a cricket to your churro!

Now is the perfect time to taste these delicacies as Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner. Both locations will be open from 11:00 to 9:00 on May 5, with mango lime and horchata as the featured fillings. As of writing, San Diablo still has availability for private events on the holiday as well!

San Diablo is finalizing preparation of a brand new food truck. Starting this summer, the truck can be found around town offering even more experimental flavors. They will serve up a gluten-free option from the truck, and are even working on a vegan recipe.

The churros just received the Best of State award for best pastry. With some pretty stiff competition in the state, you know they must be good!
