A Wild Hello Kitty Appears!

If you couldn’t get enough of the tragically short-lived Unicorn Frappuccino, you need to mark your calendar. Because something infinitely cuter is coming into your life. But only for a moment. The best things are always fleeting.

On April 14th from 10 a.m-8 p.m. the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck, in all of its bubblegum pink glory, will be parked near Red Rock Brewery at the Fashion Place Mall. What began as a way to satiate sugar seeking super-fans of Southern California, has quickly become a traveling pop-up shop: offering desserts such as Hello Kitty macarons, as well as adorable merchandise like “chubby bunny bows” and thermal bottles.

But everything the truck offers drips with kawaii, the Japanese word for cute that encapsulates the vibrant culture that grew out of radical student protests of the 1960’s. If you’re unfamiliar with the trend, there are currently two official Hello Kitty Cafe Trucks traveling the nation. Two brick and mortar cafe locations in California. And six themed restaurants in countries like Australia and Thailand. So it’s kind of a big deal.

But make sure to arrive early if you want to get your hands on the latest kawaii mug, t-shirt or baked treat. The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck made a visit to the same location last year and supplies sold out fast, leaving behind a horde of devastated fans with nothing but empty hands. Dedicated patrons can be seen gathering at 6 a.m. for the rare goodies.
