If you have spent winter in the Salt Lake Valley before, you know that it gets a little hard to breath. Last year, Salt Lake City was pronounced the 7th most air polluted city in American, in the short-term particle pollution category. And it is only expected to get worse.
To make a difference in our air quality this year, consider attending the Local Protect Our Winters Day held in partnership with Ski Utah when getting to the slopes. The event will be held January 13, the day it is most likely to snow on the Wasatch Front according to historical snow data, and encourages skiers to carpool and use UTA to get to the resorts.
Participating resorts include Sundance, Alta, Snowbird and Powder Mountain. Those who help raise awareness and choose to carpool or take public transportation will receive priority parking at all four resorts, a free exclusive POW Day 2017 Discrete beanie, a chance to win big prizes (lift tickets, skis and snowboards) and the chance to help reduce carbon emissions that day.
Last year – the first annual Local Protect Our Winters Day – saw many skiers take environmentally-friendly steps to reach the lifts through Little Cottonwood Canyon. This year features two new resorts and more opportunities to get to your resort-of-choice by healthier means.
Take public transportation or carpool on January 13 to qualify for close parking, get sweet prizes and to help make our air easier to breath. But don’t start there, an entire ski season of smarter transportation will greatly reduce our air pollution. Check out a UTA ski pass or look at ride-sharing online.
